Day 19: July 21st Yealand Redmayne to outskirts of Preston

Today has been a wonderful day of cycling - but i get ahead of myself.

I arrived at Yealand Redmayne just as Ian was going out to pub with his mate. He hailed me just as i was about to sail past! Sarah was out walking (Lady Anne's Way - in stages). Ian got me settled in to the cosy games room above the garage before disappearing off to the pub - inviting me over to the main house for supper later.  I was contemplating going out to explore with Mabs (who had been having a wonderful time snuffling in the long grass - her favourite thing) when it started to rain - and pour! Once again I was somewhere snug and dry when the heavens opened. I hope this luck continues!

I had a couple mugs of tea (provided) - and edecided to have a shower - mid way through - BANG - water stopped and i was plunged into darkness - covered in soap! A fuse had blown because (it transpired) there's some kind of leak going on (not surprising what with the torrential downpour) and the water drips down over the light in the entrance hall to the garage room. I improvised and used a towel as a flannel to wipe the soap off. Ian and Sarah got home later - and Ian sorted the electricity out by turning water off in the bathroom.

Then we had a delightful smoked mackerel and veggie rice supper with interesting conversations about bike-packing and cyclists we have hosted. The warmshowers community is worldwide and fabulous.  We shared the brownie Mary and John had given me and had kemon cheesecake too. I had a glass of ale - and went to bed replete, to sleep the sleep of the dead.. Mabs slept on the floor.

Packed up before breakfast with Ian and Sarah - and met Jack and Guy too (who had been to a wedding - and live in London).

Left around 9.30am - after a few mini hills and a downhill through woods, i ended up on the Lancaster (or 'black and white') canal path all the way to Lancaster. Glorious! Mabs loved it - jumping in the canal whenever she could. So many barges, bridges, dogwalkers, cyclists (well - it is Sunday). Was sad to leave it.

Decided to make for a campsite outside of Preston - basic but just what I like...and cheap. Found it whilst visiting a famous icecream place - Wallins (see pic with cow). So now i'm in pub next door - have eaten and had a pint. All good. Time to go sleep - tent up and waiting for me (us). I'm just on outskirts of Preston - which is huge. I got a little lost on the way to the farm, going through a large number of new housing estates. Went across the motorway several times too - lots of new roads and bridges.

Off to l Liverpool tomorrow...that's a first for me...
