Day 18:  20th July -  Shap to Yealand Redmayne

I had breakfast after a comfy stay with nurse Sharon - who talked to me nonstop! About bfs, music, the house, etc etc. Difficult to get away - think it was gone 10am.   The house and hospitality was second to none!

Lovely day's ride - if a bit muggy. Yesterday was 24 degreesC amd the first day I wore shorts and Tshirt. Today, everything stuck to me. But, despite riding over Shap Fell on the A6 - the views were worth it. Then, just before Kendall - having turned off the A6 onto NCR6 - I started following two older cyclists (like me!) - and we got chatting - they decided to show me the way into Kendall (bicycle friendly) and thence to a veggie wholefood cafe (called Baba Ganoush) - where, not only was the food good, but the cafe was dog friendly, they allowed me to charge my battery, and filled up my waterbladder too!

John and Mary have lived near here for the past 30yrs+ and ride their (non-e) bikes in to Kendall everyday. They have just come back from exploring Scotland by bicycle - to celebrate john's 80th. Mary turned 80yrs last April. A more vibrant and fit couple of that age, I have yet to meet. John bought me a surprise in a box - i peeked - a brownie. I shall share it with tonight's warmshower hosts - Ian and Sarah. I am sleeping in their games room above the garage - very pleasant with its own coffee and tea making facilities - glamping!!! Day 17 - Shap to Yealand Redmayne - 30.80miles

Small world - when I blogged about John and Mary, my ex student and then colleague and friend Zoe - who lives in Cornwall - said "I know them!"  Transpires John and Mary were the parents of one of her ex boyfriends.

Loading the photos (in random order again) reminded me that THIS was the day when I diced with death in pursuit of a phtotograph.   I rode into Kendal on a fairly busy road.  Across the OTHER side of the road was a wonderful view overlooking the valley where Kendal lay.  I was so eager to snap this picture without the cars in the way, that I crossed the road just after a blind corner without stopping to think, It was only the car driver's skill and attention that prevented him from killing both me and Mabs in a head on collision.  Stupid.  I didn't do THAT again!
